Cal Tjader Goes Latin (Album/Cover Design)

Design and typeset one album cover (LP – record pockets) for a band/musician of my choosing. I chose Bossa Nova artist Cal Tjader and decided to modernise his 1959 album ‘Cal Tjader Goes Latin’. Understanding the visual codes of the Bossa Nova music genre and Tjader’s style of music was part of my research process. This project was created in Adobe Photoshop and InDesign.

The album cover design was created in Photoshop. InDesign was used to add the typography (e.g. songs, inside sleeve text). The main type featured on the front cover, is called ‘Bossa Nova’ designed by Arthur W. Presser.

Working with tailored silhouettes, and neutral colours that reflect Parisian Chic fashion codes. The abstract print colour schemes consist of terracotta, beige and colours from Mark Rothko’s ‘Untitled’ (1955) painting. The quirky three-eyed female image gives a striking contrast with the classical silhouettes and the abstract art background.

Fabrications are mostly wool and delicate fabrics such as satin for the multi-functional scarf. Variations in weight of the wools and textures give the collection a time less feel that will remain relevant for many years into the future.

Hero Body

The Abstract Chic collection has progressed into a Spring/Summer collection. The collection continues to feature and focus on wool (Woolmark) as the main fabrication. Different weights and textures are used to create contrast and provide variation, while also achieving year-round garments.

​

The abstract female face print with the Mark Rothko inspired background continues to be the focal point of the collection. It is of particular note in the Hero Body which has developed into an oversized shirt dress with a shawl collar. The variations in weights of the wools and the satin, and the introduction of a new silhouette takes elements from last trimester’s looks while evolving the collection.

​This collection is my graduate collection for Whitehouse Institute of Design. It was also showcased at the Student Runway Show at Melbourne Fashion Week 2019.
